Not Another Tire Thread!
I'm not tring to start a great tire debate but just curious if anyone has had any experience with the fairly new Goodyear Wranger Silent Armor?
My stock tires are shot and looking to replace, plan on going with a 30x9.50 -
I was leaning towards Michelin LTX A/T but they do not make it in that size, So I looked at the Michelin LTX M/S in the 30". Nice tire but just a little on the Non-aggressive side. (I'm sure it a great ride though)
BFG is kinda the same way the T/A KO is too aggressive and the Long Trail is along the lines of the Michelin M/S as far as tread design. (All though 20.00 cheaper than the Michelin)
Anyway I came across the GoodYear tire and they come in a 30" and have a nice cross between the Michelin LTX M/S and the BFG TA KO
and they boast of a quite ride with Kevlar (Quite ride)
And Hell they have a really cool website that got to be worth something.
Link: http://www.goodyearwrangler.com/flash.html
Set of 4 with Certs from Discount Tire's is 615.00 out the door. (Same as Michelin M/S) but from what I can see this looks like a good tire. I do my majority of driving on highway but would like a good tire for when I am off road.
Anyone with any experience with these tire I would like to hear from you.
Thanks,
P.S. Is it just me or does everyone else's eyes go crazy after reading a few posts on this website from the Black baground and yellow/off white text?

Back on topic: I have no experience with this new "silent armor" tire, but will say it has to be an improvement over the previous version. They were getting flats all the time. I hope for the cost that they have improved the compound so that they will have some more reasonable treadlife and not chunk out quite so bad in the rocks.
My opinion would be to let someone else be the guinea pig. The Wranglers were a good tire, but no way near a $150 each tire. I would consider them at half that price though. If they were proven, then maybe $100 or a little more.
I really don't have "the" answer, but perhaps the Revo, or Yokohama HT would be comparable?
Perhaps I am being a bit too harsh?

Actualy that Grey background of your is a little easier on the eyes.
Anyway I should have been a little clearer on the prices I quoated. The tires I can buy for 117.00 each (after talking to them a little) Reg price is 130.00-- No install charge so Out the door with tax would be 500 +/- a few bucks for disposal fee's-- but at Discount you can buy a Certificate for free replacement for road hazard damage for the life of the tire. I have utilzed this service before and can save you some money, but it is basicly insurance. You may use it you may not? that costs 19.00 per tire or 76.00 total. That is where the 600.00 came from
But your point is well taken, I know they are only about 8 months old (on the market) so I don't think there is a lot of feedback yet.
I think its hard to find a tire that you can stand to drive on the highway (quite operation) ver on that will not chunk out when you start crawling over rock and typical off road terrain. If you find one that does not tear up them it seems like your going to pay for it with poorer handling and road noise? IMO

Ken,
I would do a little searching/surfing on the Yokohama Geolander A/T +!!s. A very good price and they have served me well. I have between 15-20K on my 30/9.50s and would buy them again if they had a narrower size in 33s. HenryJ, Barch and I have run them with good luck.

They do look pretty aggressive and may be louder than the tires you have chosen.

I know you've already mentioned that the BFG ATKO's were to agressive, but take another look. They do have a very slight hum on the highway, but IMO they're some of the best AT's you can buy. I've found wet and dry traction to be excellent. They're also supposed to handle excellently in snow. In mud they're fair....about as good as any other all terrain, but no where near a true MT. Another reason I like them is because the look so aggressive, but still act and handle like AT's. Plus they've been known to last up to 60-80K miles

Here is the Fortera Silent Armor compared to other highway all season tires (#3 overall).
Here is the Wrangler Silent Armor compared to other on/off road all terrain tires (#1 overall).
Personally, I would get the Wrangler's since they have a slightly more aggressive tread design.
I love my MT/R's. They are the best tires I have ever owned, and they have never let me down.

I broke down and bought the Goodyear Wranglers Silent Armor today.
I stopped back buy Discount Tires store because the other day I was in I had forgotten that I had purchased "Certificates" on the original tires when the truck was new. cost me 71.00 for those certs 3 years ago. Anyway over the weekend on a trip to Crown King, AZ (those of you from AZ know where I'm talking about) I got a flat tire which is what started me off on this whole new tire quest. (The fact that my tires were bald just wasn't enough to get me started)
Anyhow, I went in today and they offered me the replacement cost of the tire that was flat because I had the cert. -97.00 credit.
I said that would be great and then I gave him the business card that the guy I had spoken too a couple of days ago and showed him the original quote I had gotten. (fairly discounted already) Long story short is out the door 4 new tires for 437.40 + I added the 76.00 to put the Certificate Warranty on the new tires - So all totaled 513.40 money on the certs is well spent IMO.
Now I have driven them a sum total of 2.7 miles from the Discount Tire store to my house and I got to tell you they handle and ride great!
Thanks for all the input and advise, hopefully I will not be disappointed in these tires (I doubt that I will) I all the reviews I found online spoke well of the tires.

Congrats! Be sure to fill us in from time to time on how they are doing.
I'd be interested in what you think of them six months from now too.

I've been hearing quite a bit about Crown king on the Riding Arizona forum. Maybe you can offer further info on a different thread. Did you do it stock? and was it fun? I live in Casa Grande and was tempted to try.Ken wrote:over the weekend on a trip to Crown King, AZ (those of you from AZ know where I'm talking about)
