rim backspacing/ tire size

Post by bwenny247 »

both Superlift and BDS claim to be able to run 10.50 tires (33" and 31" respectfully) on a rim with stock backspacing. My concern is with rubbing issues on the inner wheel well or frame? i know our wells are cozy enough with a stock tire and it seems like you would rub with a 10.50 tire.

also, if i was to run a smaller backspacing with wider tires, say 12.50, will it create the type of problem bubbalou (sorry if i mis-spelled it) is facing with the wheels bowing in?
If i can figure out exactly what the maximum degree our wheels will turn when cranked, then i can do the math and figure out what backspacing would suffice. anybody have a clue?

any help or comments are greatly appretiated
thank you

I've got ~8" (235/75/15) tires on 15x7 rims with 4" backspace and they just barely rub on the back corner of the fender. 3/4 turn and a bump = rub. 1/4 turn more or less and no rub or 3/4 turn with out bump = no rub. So, my conclusion is that +2" is just slightly more than will fit without rub.

A 10.5" tire on stock 6" backspace is only 1.25" wider than stock and should not rub. On the fender anyway. I can't say whether there will be any rubbing on the inside of the wheel/tire.

In order to run 33's on a stock offset wheel you would have to add an extension to you steering stops on you lower control arm (not be able to turn as sharp). A 33 will rub the side of the frame rail when turning sharp. This would give a fun little catching point for the lugs of the tires to hit the bottom of the frame. I you are going fast enough when this happens then the truck would jerk bad. And in the least it would tear up your tires. The 31's are just short enough to not require any trimming or steering mods to prevent rubbing. The 31x10.5's on my ZR-5 with 5" of lift clear perfect.

If you run less backspacing add a wider tire you should clear the frame OK but will definately have to do some trim work on the lower portions of the fender opening.

anyone out there running a 12.50 tire?

if so, what size wheel (8" or 10"), how much backspacing, and how much rubbing?

thanks again

Im running 15x8 w/5" backspace, 31/11.50/15 super swamper, with 2"bl, torsion bar crank and 3" shackles. The tires are extremely aggressive, i trimmed slightly on the rear bottom of front fenders, i still rub at low speed turning with a bump, such as a driveway entrance but i've adjusted my driving to avoid rubbing but get it once in awhile, after having thisettup for approx 8-9months i have no damage to tires or fenders. i suppose if i whittled a little more i could get it to stop, but im waiting till spring when it warms up. hope this helps. :D
