Back spacing vs spacer

Post by justinlee5 »

Maybe I am not understanding backspacing correctly, but what is the difference between a wheel with less backspacing and putting spacers on a wheel with more backspacing. Lets say you bought aftermarket rims with 4 in of backspacing. How would that be different from putting 2" spacers on the stock wheel with 6 in of back spacing. The reason I am asking is because it seems from the searches that I have done that changing wheels with less back spacing can mean rub city. Why would this not happen when I put spacers on. Thanks.

there is no difference. moving the tires out 2" via 2" spacers or 4" backspace will both result in tires that rub.

Although, I don't recall anyone ever recommending 2" spacers on the front wheels. The stock setup possitions the rear wheels closer together than the fronts. 1.25" seems to be the ideal for front wheels and 2" in rear will put rear tires in same track as the front resulting in a similar track to the ZR2.

You could add wheels with different rearspacing to even things up , but that would make rotations rather troublesome.

There are those who have chosen to reduce rearspacing in lew of adding spacers.
F9K9 has done this. His wheels have 4.75" rearspacing. That is 1.25" less than stock. He did add 1.25" spacers to the rear to even the track too.

This is much the same as what I have by adding 1.25" spacers to the front, and 2" spacers to the rear.
