What width for my new dubs?....Someday

Post by NTXCrew »

Here goes...So, I think I've decided to go the street route. I'm still going to keep the 4 wheel drive, even if it's never all-wheel down the road.
I am going to use the Belltech torsion key to lower the front about 3 or 4 inches, their replacement leaf springs to lower the rear 3 inches, and blocks to make up the remaining 1 or 2 inches. Basically, a 3/4 or 3/5 drop. Everything will be reversable.
20's are going to be my rim size of choice. I've been looking at wheel/tire packages until my eyes spin. I am going to buy my wheels from a manufacturer that builds them to your specs (Intro wheels, Billet Specialties, etc.), so I want to get my backspacing right. This includes compensating for the rear axle width by having less backspacing on the rear wheel pair (1.5 to 1.75 inches less). Obviously, my wheel set will have less height than even the stock wheel/tire package (listed at 28.8 inches by Goodyear.), so height doesn't play into it as much, even with the drop. The BFGoodrich Tires I'm checking out are running about 27" to 28" tall. Keep in mind that the stock setup I have right now leaves about a 3 to 5 inch gap between the fender well and tires.
How wide do ya'll think I can go? I want to do about 245 or 255 on about an 8 in wheel in front and 275 to 295 on maybe 10 inchers out back. What backspacing should I have? Should I keep the front at 6 inches and then just have 4.25 or 4.5 inches in the rear?
All input will be helpful. Thanks -Jim

You could probably get 315's in the back fairly easily. They'll look sweet. I knew a few Z28 guys that put 315's on 17x10's in the back and they really looked awesome. 20's should be good for an S-10 too. I saw one on the way home tonight that had bling-bling rims that looked like 16's and they were ridiculously small.

As for rim size and backspacing...I wouldn't go less than 6-7" BS on the rear wheels if you're going to 10" wide rims. Remember...on a 10" wide rim with only 4.5" BS, that means that 5.5" of rim is outside of the hub...which means the outside edge of the rim will be sticking out 4.5" more than stock. With 5-6" of drop in the back, any flex at all in the rear and you'll br rubbing the fender big time. Look at the side view pics of my truck on my website. The outside of my tires stick out only 3.5" more than stock, and they sit outside the fender a decent amount. Like I said...with 10" wide rims, I would get at least 7" of BS to be safe. For the fronts, you'd only want about 1" wider than stock because the front fenders are flared less than the back. Mine stick outside the fender at 1.5" wider than stock. So for the front...probably 8" wide rims with no less than 6" of BS.

Hope this helps...

Actually...now that I think about it, they were 17x11's...not 17x10's. Still 315's on the rear though. :thumb:

On s10forum.com, there's a guy who has 285's on 10 inchers in the rear with 5.5 backspacing.....are our rear axle widths the same? His truck is a 2000 Xtreme. Does the drum vs. disc brakes change things? I'm still churning the mental gears..... :D

I don't know if the 2wd's have narrower axles or not. 10" rims with 5.5" BS would be the same width as mine...3.5" wider than stock on eash side. Are there any pics to see if his stick outside the fender at all?

Not bad...too low for my taste though. I like it when the wheels are centered in the wheel well...not stuffed way up inside. He said he trimmed the front fenders too. I would think he'd have rubbing issues in back also, but he said he didn't. :?

If you're getting rims that big and that open of a design, seriously consider getting some larger brakes. Those tiny little stock rotors look silly behind those big rims.

It will be a really good look on a crew though. :thumb:

No nipping or tucking for me or my truck.... :D The way I figure, I will get the rims and tires I want, then, using the lower torsion bar key, I can lower/raise the front down/up as much as I need to fit the rim/tire package and hopefully avoid rubbing. I'll then lower the rear to match what works up front.
