I figure this is stock issues, so I posted here. My 4x4 is acting strange. I can go from 2WD HI mode to 4WD LO mode and back, but cannot go into 4X4 HI mode at all.
I've looked at my service manual, but there are allot of diagnostic steps, and I have no diagnostic tools, just my head. I was thinking maybe the switch itself, but probably not. When I hit the 4WD HI button going from 2WD HI, nothing happens, not even clicking. But, if I try the same step, but have the truck sitting still and in neutral, I hit the 4WD HI button going from 2WD HI, and it will totally skip 4WD HI and go straight to 4WD LO!
From looking at the schematics, it seems that this 4WD sensing stuff is also tied into the ABS system, and my ABS light is on. But it seems that part of the ABS is working, cause I can hear slight clicking when I jam on my breaks.
Dag gone automatic crap, never have these problems with a manual t-case lever!

Just a totally off the wall guess here: While I doubt the ABS and the 4wd problems are connected to each other, I'll bet the failures are related. In other words that mud you ran through that clogged up your front wheel sensors may also have gotten into the 4wd shift mechanism. From what I know it's motor driven but it must have some sort of switches or sensor that tells the computer what gear position it's in. You might be able to take it apart and clean it.
I'm inclined to agree with Hobie. To heck with all this hi-tech garbage. Put a manual system in it and be done with it. That's what I'll probably do when mine eventually fails.

That would help me with the front diff locking up, but what about the HI 4HI gears? I am taking my time with this one. But I will need 4HI when winter comes!
