Front wheel bearing factory torque specification

Post by BlackDime »

Hey guys,

My dad and I just put a new right front hub assembly on my '03 ZR5 and I wanted to know what the factory torque spec was. I have been seeing anything from 103 ft lbs to 180.

I thought it was higher than that but I guess Brule has the specs below.

I got the the truck all done and put back together with no problems. My dad put a call in to a guy he knows that I guess has acess to that kind of GM info in order for us to get the spec. According to that guy, GM had no bulletins posted on that torque spec and 103 ft lbs is indeed the magic number. All said and done I spent $150 +tax for a new right front National hub assembly. Not too bad I suppose but it only has a 1 year warranty.

The above info is for replacing just the bearing itself? What would be required to change an entire hub assembly? Another project that has to be completed on project blazer for my friend. I have the whole hub/bearing assembly with the speed sensor.

Bearings are not replaceable on the 4wd models. It is a sealed hub assembly.

Well, that is the factory replacement procedure. Can you cut some corners? Maybe. Can it be done without the specialty tools? Perhaps. I have only needed the puller once. A swift tap with a BF bronze hammer can jar the axle splines loose if they don't release on their own.
I'd suggest following the advice of our #1 moderator around here and soak those fasteners with some Deep Creep penetrating oil at least every day for a week before starting the project.

Thats what I thought. I recall when my father and I replaced the driver side bearing on my CC we didnt use any pullers, just an impact gun? I wanted to do it this weekend, but maybe not. The grinding/vibration is so bad it sounds like a freight train thats been doing a lot of braking in a rainstorm. (flat spots oh my!)

If things are not rusted terribly it is no worse than a long brake job. Pretty straight forward and simple really. A nice holiday weekend project.

Once apart I would suggest you become friends with another product.

The crap is just plain messy and I don't care what you do to prevent it from becoming a mess, it's just gonna happen. :roflmao: You can wear gloves or whatever, the gloves will transfer it to something else that you will want to wipe down.

You'll appreciate it when you need to go back in again and replace something.

Ah me and the white bottle are very good friends from my rear caliper pin episodes. I however may not waste the time on it for this job though since it is not my truck and hopefully I never have to do this again to it, next time around he can pay someone to do it. :) If there is a bottle to be found in dads disaster garage I will use it, otherwise I wont go out of my way.
