Old Post about fluid change

Post by Mike »

Someone posted a topic about the manual stating that either the transfer case, differentials or transmission fluid should be flushed during the 3000 mile fluid change. Can someone direct me to that post? I can't remember what it said exactly. Also, has anyone compiled a list of the more common problems associated with our crew cabs. I would like to have one for reference and to check periodically to see if any of these issues show up on my truck. What all went wrong with Joe's truck that the dealer had to buy it back under the lemon law? I have a strange sort of clunking noise whenever I start backing up. It sounds like something is loose in the drivetrain and rocking. Any help on the above items would be greatly appreciated!!!! :D

Well, I mentioned one time that if you do have the rear gm locking diff, that the oil should be changed at least at the first oil change. Not sure how often after that. I've changed mine twice and I have 31k miles.

Problems would probably vary from each truck, but some that s-10's have is the idler arm and the exhaust manifold gasket.

Here is a link to all the TSB's. But don't just bring the list to the dealer, but it does have some past known problems that can be used as a guide if something gives you problems. Don't get paranoid by the list, it is relatively small compared to allot of vehicles, and no recalls yet.

And most of it is just text book/manual/procedures updates.

I had the G80 rear end in my Z28 (can't remember if it was locking or limited slip...is there a difference?) and I had the fluid changed in it every 12,000-15,000 miles. You can usually start to notice some gear noise around that time, so I'd say that every third or fourth oil change should be fine for changing the diffy fluid.

I saw in the manual it states to change the rear diff fluid at first oil change.

if you have the g-80, you change the rear diff at the first oil change. thats it, not the transfer case or tranny. then change the diff fluid every 2 years or 24k miles.
