Locking rear differential?

Post by green02crew »

I have the G80 glovebox code. Does this mean I have the locking rear differential? It sure doesn't feel like it locks and I can spin one tire separately from the other. Is it maybe malfunctioning?

G80 = locking rear differential aka Eaton Gov-Loc.

It is possible that yours is broken since the engagement pin is the weak point in these lockers.

Put a floor jack under the rear diff and lift the rear end high enough that both rear wheel are off the ground.

Have a friend hold one tire steady while you spin the other one as fast as you can.

After a few revolutions the pin should engage and lock both wheels together.

The Gov-Loc locks the axles together when there is a 100-200 rpm difference between the 2 wheels.

This simple test should tell you if it's working properly.

If it is broken is there an easy fix to it?

Yes, replace it with something better like a True-Trac, Detroit Locker, ARB (requires an air compressor), Powertrax, etc.

The Gov-Loc is not all that strong and I personally don't like the harsh engagement it has.

I suppose repair is possible if you can order the necessary parts from Eaton. :?

Thanks for the info I'll test it out this week and see whats going on. I don't feel like dumping a ton of money onto repairs if it does have a problem so I might pretend it never had the G80 if it is broken and an expensive fix.
