Rear wheel loose

Post by Walt »

Heya ppls, here latelly I've been feeling/hearing a clunking sound in the rear when hitting bumps and such. Today I decided to check it out. When I kicked my passenger side rear tire, it moved very slightly. My first thought was "ok, lugnuts are loose", but the lugnuts on the tire and spacer are tight. Then I tried moving the hub, and it moved! It's moving in and out about 1/4" of an inch, but doesn't have any play in it side to side/up and down. This includes the rotor, but not the caliper. The other side doesn't do this. Would this be a wheel bearing issue? I can provide a pic of the exact part(s) that is/are moving.

Thanks guys!

Looks like we are both in for another lesson. When I had rear diff problems and got "rear diff 101" I yanked it out of the XJ and took it to someone to fix. They were way over my head but, maybe not yours

On a C-clip axle there is some movement. Nothing to really get too worried about. If there is excessive wear the side gears, c-clip, center pin, or perhaps the axle then parts could be replaced to eliminate the slack.

Not really that big a deal. Most of the travel should occur under hard side loading or slalom.

It is possible you could have a wheel bearing issue, carrier bearings, or something else. Some disassembly will be required to check those things. If it is time for a brake job or lube change I would drop the cover and wheels to check everything out. I wouldn't drop everything to do it as if it were critical though.

Turn up the radio, or quit hitting bumps at a speed that you can hear the noise ;)

I had a similar problem on my 88 S10 Blazer and it turned out to be the wheel bearing on one side.

I could not only move it in and out 1/4", but also up and down about 1/8".

On just about ever c-clip axel vehicle I have seen you can shake the back end side to side and hear it go clunk, clunk.

If you are always hearing this noise or if it seems unusually loud then something might be worn out.

As Brule already pointed out some in/out movement is normal on vehicles with c-clip retained axels.

What doesn't seem normal is that you say only one side does this. :?:

The center differential pin may be worn a little more on the side that moves, but that seems unlikely.

It could be a wheel bearing, but I would also think that you would have a little up/down movement as well. :?

Is this noise new or did you just never notice it because your stereo is always turned up? :?:

Ok, I think I'm gonna make a trip to the dealership. I still haven't noticed anymore movement other than a little in and out, but now when offroad, or hitting bumps, the noise is very noticeable. And the noise hasn't always been there, and has definitely gotten worse latelly. Hopefully it's just bearings, as my warranty will cover it.

Thanks guys.
