Might be the encoder motor, tccm, or 4x4 dash switch? This link might help some. Transfercase Codes

Yep, I've had my fair share of that problem. Listen to what Killian96ss has to say! My Transfer Case control module was replaced twice, then they decided to replace the encoder motor... It was all under warranty but it took them three times to find the real problem!! They would "fix" it then the next time I went to use the 4x4 it wouldn't work. It works perfectly now since they replaced the encoder motor.

First things first. Have you checked for a blown fuse?
Also I saw in your post on codes you have only used 4 wheel drive a couple of times since you have had the truck. Have you at least engaged the 4 wheel drive once a month or so as recommended otherwise internal components are apt to fail due to lack of lubrication.

1st Check vac actuator under battery tray for tears, or leaks, and that the vac hose is connected. Replace if found
2nd Check vac hose leading from vac actuator to vac switch on transfer case for cracks and dry rot. Replace if found.
3rd Check remaining 2 hoses from vac switch on transfer case for dryrot or cracks Replace if found.
If all of the above are fine, disconnect your negative battery cable for 1/2 hour then reconnect it. If your 4x4 works after that you probably have a failing TCCM (Transfer case control module)
If that doesn't solve it, it's most likely the encoder motor.

The switch itself can fail as well. I have replaced two of them on different vehicles.

4 x 4 Troubleshoot
You guys are great, lots of helpful hints and advice. I'll have some work to do on my next day off.
I think my truck may still be under warrantee, it's a 03' but I only have 19K miles so if it's the TCCM module that would help. I called the dealer just to see the cost, 360.00, yikes!!!!
Thanks again anymore things to look for feel free to reply away!!!

Re: 4 x 4 Troubleshoot
If you still have the factory warranty then I would just let a local GM dealership fix everything for free. Unless your Crew was originally purchased in January 03 I would bet that you should still have a little bit of warranty left.snowsurfer wrote:I think my truck may still be under warrantee, it's a 03' but I only have 19K miles

I disconnected the battery for over a half hour, checked all the vac lines but still nothing lites up on the switch. When I was driving home from work later that day the lites came on but very weak since I was on the freeway I couldn't try engaging it in 4wd. Pulled off to get gas and try the 4 x 4. After filling gas lites did not come on again. Oh well such is life!!!!

Encoder Motor ... Shorting out?
SeattleZR2 posted January 23, 2005 wrote:My four wheel drive isn't working. I have no lights in the dash switch, (4 switch: 2hi, auto 4wd, 4hi, 4lo). I've checked the fuses and found the 4wd fuse to be good, but the ATC fuse to be blown. I replaced the ATC fuse, to have it immediately blow again. All the wiring underneath appears to be in good shape: nothing is loose, nothing is pinched, and nothing is too close to the exhaust. When I unplug the encoder motor, I can replace the fuse without it blowing. However, when I replug the encoder motor the fuse immediately pops. Am I to assume that there is a short in the encoder motor and that replacing this will fix my problem?
SeattleZR2 posted January 14, 2006 wrote:approximately one year later and I've got it fixed. Parts required: two encoders and one control module.
The problem originated in the control module. It fried the encoder. Both required replacement. Total bill, $1400.

OUCH!!!! Wow!!! What a mess....
Well had some time today, tried the #13 pin to ground thing, no lites lit up at all so couldn't check if any codes. Tried the 1/2 hr disconnect also, no luck, still no lites.
I have an appointment next Wednesday at the dealer best I rob a bank before I go...Hopefully I'll still have some warantee, not sure how long or miles but I think they said 3 yrs/36K, if that's o I'm in luck.....

Well, got my truck back after 10 days at the dealer, the TCCM module was bad as suspected. I actually called prior to taking it in to see if it was in stock and it was. Unknown to the dealer he told me the part needed to be ordered.....Soon after I told him I spoke to the parts department and was told it was in stock my truck was repaired with in 2 days....Got 4 months left on warrantee hope this doesn't happen again....

From past experience and seeing that you only have 4 months left of warranty, I would check to make sure your 4x4 keeps working once every week, even if you don't need it. My TCCM was replaced twice within a 5 week period. They finally figured out that that wasn't the problem but it was the Encoder Motor. Your problem may be solved permanently, but just to play it safe, check it weekly to make sure it still works.

Check the plastic boots on the front drive axcels for leaks if your warranty is running out soon. I got stuck with that bill a month after my warranty expired.
