at times it does, when i back-up into the exhaust, but other than that i dont know. Dont ride with the windows down often either. The sound it makes isnt always there. Only when i try to speed up and not the whole time i am speeding up.

sorry I don't know what that means but I've always heard that when your car stinks like that, it's likely a leak in you catalytic converter.

I am going to say , no. But not that it is not possible, just that I doubt that you would say this is the only , or most noticeable symptom.

If your cat is "messed up" your first indication that things are going awry would be the gas mileage declining. Now, if you don't keep real close track, this may go unnoticed since we don't get great mileage to begin with.

Next will be the exhaust getting quieter. This too will go undetected since it happens so gradually , that it is not noticed.

Now for things that start being noticeable...spark knock starts to rear it's ugly head, but you just blame it on bad gas or the need for a tune-up.

Then the temperature seems to rise to operating temperature faster than it did before. You just pass that off to the gas , engine tune, or weather, but nothing to worry about, right?

If you are starting to suspect the cat, by now you have bounced a deadblow hammer off the cat, and listened for any sound of looseness inside. Didn't really hear anything , right?

OK, now you take that long trip pulling hills and really heat that sucker up. When you try to push it a little, the detonation becomes more noticeable, and the temp rises. Soon it becomes difficult not to have knocking and you find the only way to cool the engine is to decelerate. Gas mileage has really gone to heck! The temperature rises almost as fast as the fuel level decreases.
Hey, just noticed the intake sounds really loud! You push on the gas and it is really sluggish, and the intake really makes a "BWAAHH" sound.

You now have a problem with the cat ( see image ), and never heard a hollow metallic sound from under the passenger side floor board ;)
