bed light Idea/install

Post by 2bunik »

:) I picked this up last night at the store. Image..I was gonna install it today but it rained. I am gonna put it in the bed to help out when unloading at night, it will also help see in the bed when I get my tonnaue cover.. I was thinking about the cheap mods page and figured why not. it only cost five bucks. ill post some pics if I get to it tomorrow. I just wanted to see if any one had done any thing like this for the bed...

I also wanted to see if any one knew what color wire went to the interior light switch wheel thing. I want that light to hook up there so when I turn on the interior lights. the bed lights up to. ...

should be a dark blue with white stripe wire coming off the back of the switch.

I would just splice into the wire for the foot well lighting though, much easier to do, and there are only two wires going to it. either one should work. if you don't fell like probing them.

As soon as you mentioned a bed light (and I'm all about cheap mods these days), I started on a little crusade myself. Though I'm still working on fog/driving lights, I put together a little plan for my bed lights.

I was thinking of doing it two ways

1. Use the rear-wiper wiring already behind the plate just left of the radio. The wiring is already run to the rear of the cab, just add switch and wire up!

2. Use the interior light. For this I was just going to run a relay from the dome light itself. When I started looking at a wire sketch of that headlight/domelight area, I decided to leave it alone. I can post the sketch (it's in tiff format, Quicktime can view it) if anybody want's to try and read it. It's a little above and beyond what I can figure out.

BTW, what are those lights? How do you plan to install them on the bed? I'm looking for a non-drill method, some sort of clamp.

they are supposed to be interior lights but .. I feel it will be nice and bright in the bed. I plan to mount it on the inside of the bed on the drivers side.. for two reasons. one I wont hit it with anything i slam into the bed.. and two it is kinda protected from the rain... I am gonna drill into the bed to mount it. I will take pics tomorrow morning...

oh you say the wiper wireing is there? rear wiper... ???? Is this for blazers?? :!: If its for our trucks then where do the wires end up in the bed so i can tap into them...
I really want to use the interior light switch though

Thats my next Mod!

With my new cap on i plan on running a hot lead into my new enclosed space. The hot lead will connect to a sensor that will close its contact when darkness is upon us. The output of this contact will connect to a rear lift window contact that closes when the rear window is opened. I'll mount (2) lights inside the bed area with a pot to vary the 12vdc to each light so i can change the brightness as needed.

Total Estimated Cost:

Sensor $26.95
Window Microswitch $9.95
Lights $5.99 each
Pot (Potentiometer not Weed) $4.50
Wire $3.00
Labor Free, its on me (for myself of course)

Now when its dark and i need to get into the Bed area, i'll automatically have light. If we go a little farther with the mod, you can add a timer that shuts down the 12vdc in case you forget to close the window so you won't drain the battery. When i'm done i'll post a pic.
