Shift indicator flickering

Post by ApproachMedium »

Would this fix a gauge cluster where the shift indicator and odometer are going completely dark and then coming on again? I have this problem with a friends blazer. I was lead to believe this is an issue with the gauge cluster itself.

Re: Flickering Lights - alternator sense wire

Post by HenryJ »

Not likely to be related to the alternator sense wire. Check the cluster connection, but yes more than likely it will be a cluster or ignition switch problem. Do a little searching. Not only in this forum. I do recall a TSB about the disappearing "prundle" indicator.
The headlamps flickering is an indicator of alternator issues.

Gotcha. I would assume the cluster out of my 02' CC should fit right in, I guess I can plug the one from the blazer in to the CC to see if it is in fact the cluster or another issue.

Give this a try: '99-'02 instrument cluster cold solder joints. Sounds suspiciously similar to the wiper module fix.

Thanks for the link! I have been googling for 2 hours now trying to find it. I know I had seen some DIY fixes before but for some reason now that I need it I am flooded with people that want to charge me $200 to do something I am very confident I can do myself.

Pulled the gauge cluster apart today and going to possibly test tomorrow. I dont see anything right away that looks like its been poorly soldered. When I find the solution if there are steps needed to make a repair Ill be sure to post on here and maybe we can make a page for it.

Use a magnifying glass and if in doubt solder it again. Most times no additional solder is needed. Just heat and re-melt.

So to update on this one, I tried the cluster from my crew in the blazer and had the same problems. Somewhere else I had seem mention about a possible bad ignition switch? It also likes to make the turn signal flasher click randomly which seems to be related to the multifunction switch being loose internally. I have the old one from the CC I can replace with if needed. Where is the ignition switch on these or is it related to the many little cables and plugs on the multi function switch?
