Rear door speakers

Post by PATRICKH »

Yea me, I'm actually getting to work on something fun this time around....

Are the rear door speakers the same size as the front door speakers?

I believe that all the door speakers are 6.5"

I would advise against spending much on rear door speakers.. The acoustics of the rear door cavities make for terrible sound. The best to hope for rear speakers is to use them for rear sound fill. A decent coaxial speaker should do fine. Save the more expensive components for the fronts.

Ok, cool. I was looking at a set of pioneer 2 ways, as this set had a shallow mounting depth, $29 thru crutchfield. May upgrade the stock stereo too. Thanks for the input

I upgraded from stock. I wish I left it alone. If you have the newer style with 6 disc changer, I would leave it in and not "upgrade" with the exception of speakers.

No, still have the factory single disc. Was going to go with a HD tuner, but after reading your reply and searching this topic, thinking Im gonna just swap out the speakers.

Thanks again for the input.

All I did was add the Bazooka tube and I was satisfied with the audio in mine.

In my rig I got a set of 4x6 speakers for the front super cheap open box clearance at WorstBuy. I also picked up a few weeks later the set of shallow mount matching rear pioneers. I would have left my fronts alone because the stock tweeters and woofers in the front arent too horrible, however one of the two tweeters died and it wasnt worth finding a replacement. I however suggest if you should do the same path I did with the fronts, loose your door speakers. You will get alot less distortion that way.

My current config is a Pioneer DEH-P7200HD with HD Radio and USB

Pioneer 4x6 G series 2 way coaxial in the dash

Pioneer 5.25 G series 2 way coaxial in the rear doors. These will fit, but take a little more time to install. No modifications necessary, but a 6.5 would fit better. For $25 though, I wasn't going to argue the size.

Bazooka BTA6100 - Works great, but I did it again I would shoot for the BTA6250D, 250w Class D amped tube. The 6100 is a great stand in for the missing tones from your factory system or from the after market stuff above. I connected my tube using the RCA cables because I am an audio nut after all, and I wasn't going to let the little amp in that sub be my crossover and that little bass dial be my only control for the sub level. If you do get an aftermarket head and the bazooka I highly suggest this. It gives you much better control over the blending of the speakers via the head units build in crossovers, sub woofer level control and also allows you to turn the sub off should you have passengers in the back seat that might not want the low tones coming into their backs and ears. This came in handy when a buddy was back there who had a headache, and one time when I had to bring my friend, his girl, and the baby (sleeping) home in a car seat back there.

The front door speakers don't automatically produce distortion. That's a combination of several factors like speaker quality, head unit volume, equalizer settings, etc...

Speaking from experience, if you get a nice pair of 6" components or ever midrange woofers for your doors, and you adjust your eq and crossovers appropriately, they will add a huge amount of depth to your music. I used to run 4x6 component plates in the dash, and old kicker rmb6 woofers in the doors. It sounded excellent when powered by the head unit or an external amp. If you really wanted to go all out, get a set of 5-1/4" components and squeeze them into the dash instead of the 4x6"s. keeping the 6" speakers in the doors of course.

Hope this helps. :)

The issue I had with distortion there is because of running the door speakers and the dash speakers together. Trying to pull a little to much power from my head units amp and with the lower ohms, it just wasn't giving me the clarity at higher volumes. Once the lower speakers were removed from the equation it did help with the sound quality, however it did remove some of the depth from the music. The eventual project is to remove the door speakers, and the dash ones and replace them with a set of Polk MOMO 6.5 2 way components that have been dormant in my closet for 4 years since I sold my suburban. Then I will have to find a place to mount an amp for them, as they sound a heck of a lot better when given some real power. (150w RMS-300w Peak)

The door/dash combo definitely sounds best when both sets of speakers are amped with a dedicated power amplifier. :) I used to run my dash and doors sets off an Alpine 4 channel, getting signal from the front output of an Alpine head unit. I ran the rear speakers off the rear channel of the head unit. A pair of cheap kicker compvr 8" subs sat behind my back seat, powered by an old punch amp.
