I used to have a 96 S-10 that did that same thing. Turned out to be a cheapo Advance Auto Parts thermostat. I bought a new GM thermostat and that took care of the problem.

I'm in the same boat with my crew cab S10. I tried the spring that I bought from my local Chevy dealer and it didn't work so I'm going to just buy the whole door and paint it.
