Removing ZR5 Flares

Post by Cajun »

The paint on my flares is faded and some of the paint has faded down the bare plastic. The red line in the attached photo shows the missing paint.I tried the remove the flares yesterday evening but ran into a snag. I removed the visible screws and drilled out the poprivets but the flare is still firmly in place. I did notice three or four plastic cover caps inside of the fender well. I guess that there are additional screws under them, but darkness caught me. I'll remove the plastic caps this evening and go from there. Anyone know if there are any hidden fasteners up front? I did not see or feel anything similar to the plastic caps on the rear.

Question answered. I do wish that the photos were still available though.

...got all four flares off and cleaned up this evening. Turns out August in MA might have been a better time to remove the front flares with the 3M double stick tape. Using a carpenter's chisel now to separate the tape from the flares... :?

Careful with those fender flares. Mine was around $430 to replace.

That was my mod thread... Pictures are still up and loaded for me?

But my paint job wasn't good apperantly. They are flaking terribly now, and my front passenger flare came off it's tape and broke off from a mounting screw. I just haven't fixed it yet.

What did you paint them with? and how did you prep?

I hit mine w/ wet sand 220, washed with soap and water, wiped down w/ alcohol, four coats rustolem hammered black and four coats duplicolor clear coat. Hope it holds-up!

It's all posted up in that thread of mine you linked. Only thing I can guess is maybe I used to low of grit to sand with, and not high enough to prep before paint. But it was the most involved paint job I have done.
