steering linkage

Post by YellowCrewCabber »

I need to replace one maybe two parts in the steering linkage. Driver's side tire wearing on the inside and too much free play in the steering wheel. I have read here that Moog makes better parts than the OEM. Since the truck has 119K on it should I replace it all. If Moog sold the entire parts list as a kit that would be great. Wouldn't it?

I am running the HD parts from NAPA. So far so good.

You will likely need just the idler arm assembly. It is easily replaced. If the pitman arm is loose it too can be replaced, although with more effort.

I have replaced one item about 8 months ago. It's on the passenger side and bolts to the frame.

Idler. Have you been greasing it every oil change?

Are you saying the new idler arm is bad already?

That is not unheard of for an idler to fail from lack of lubrication. If the rest has been getting the same service, you may be due for balljoints, tierod ends and the pitman as well.

Well they do get lubed but not every oil change. Some are such a pain to get to.

Easier to lube than replace though.

Heavy Duty. They carry a less expensive line as well.

I got my '96 S10 when it had 107,000 miles on it and I've always lubed the front end every second oil change (every 6,000), and now the truck has over 212,000 miles on it and the front is still doesn't have any front end parts that have so much play that they need replacing. (still tight!)

I've been using an industrial grade grease called Alco Metalube ( http://www.Alco-Metalube.com ) and it's been working great
