Roof Rack

Post by noah »

Has any one else had the Chevy roof rack installed on their crew? I had one done about 6 months ago and one of the rubber grommets is now pulling out of the roof. The rack never fit perfect like the factory installed ones but I figured I could live with that. If I loosen the bolts and push the grommet back down then retighten it fixes the problem for a few weeks then it works loose again. It’s driving me nuts and I’m afraid water is going to start leaking in. Any suggestions on how to fix?

That is gross, I think that thing sticking up is the cylinder for the air-ride suspension

My suggestion would require taking the roof rack off and replace the plastic insulators with double stick tape.

I am refering to the plastic "seat/seal/gasket" that is under the rack foot.

The difficult part may be finding the double stick tape wide enough to cut a new one piece gasket. I know it exists for attaching body mouldings and badges as a tape.

My rack uses it the full length (approx. 2.5 wide x 40" long?). I think it would be enough to hold the rack even without the nutserts that I installed to hold mine down.

Doing this would solve the problem. It would both seal the moisture out and take the stress off of the expansion inserts.

I'll try looking around and see if the double stick is available in sheets or at least a width that would work.

A search for 3M adhesive tape may work?

EDIT: widest I could find was 1" double stick adhesive tape.
