Just another dumb question.....

Post by rickscrewcab »

But...why does the A/C compressor cycle on and off whenever the defrost setting is used? :?:
I've been hearing a chirp noise every 20-30 seconds, so while my hood was up and my defroster was on, I noticed that whenever the Compressor clutch engaged or released, thats when I would hear the chirp. I've been thinking for months that it was my belt slipping.
It just seemed curious that I'm using my heat, but my A/C compressor is running. Gotta effect gas usage too. :?:

Seems that we are both laymen when it comes to your question. Bear with me because it is all magic to me. The AC compressor is on when late model rigs have their setting on defrost. It not only keeps your ac compressor oiled and active but, assists in removing humidity from you cab.

OK guys, That is as much BS that I can expel in one evening. Help him out~

Removes the humidity wins. The air goes through the heater core where it warms. Warm air is less dense and can contain less water. It passes over the evaporator where, surprisingly enough it condenses. This removes the moisture from the air and helps to defrost your windshield.

Hows that for a story :mg:

If you don't think you need it try pulling the AC clutch connector to disable the compressor. Your windshield will fog up.

In a weak attempt at conserving gas mileage and to eliminate that pesky cycling, I disconnected my compressor for a while.
I was unable to keep the windshield fully defrosted. Once reconnected the difference was very noticeable.

I really don't understand all the workings but, it beats the hel_ out of people driving around with their knob turned to recycle and wiping the inside windows when they can't break away for a moment with whatever all important freakin' cell phone conversation they are having! Yes, poor grammar and a run on sentence from hell!!!! So be it!

Having the A/C cycle doesn't really affect your fuel mileage much...

Uses less fuel driving down the road at 20MPH or faster, than having the windows down, lol.

:nono: Negative on that! Myth busted! :nono:

They did this on Mythbusters with two identical Ford Expeditions. Same weight and gas, one with A/C on and the other with windows open at 45MPH. The one with windows open went quite a bit longer.....

You heard about the Yuma Agent. A very unfortunate incident. I'm currently teaching immigration law at the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM.
