Free Gmail accounts & 250MB online album space

Post by Walt »

We have another Gmail invite thread around here somewhere, but I thought this warranted a new thread.

I have 92 Gmail invites left to give out, so if you'd like a Gmail account, PM me, and I'll send you an invite.

For anyone who doesn't know, Gmail is google email. You get 2.7+ gigabytes of storage space, a clean web-based interface, and the google search engine for your email.

Now on to the real point of this post. Google has recently begun to offer Picasa Web Albums to Gmail account holders. These albums come with 250MB of storage space. Anyone with a Gmail account can activate an album. I have three albums for a total of 750MB of space because I signed up with three Gmail accounts. :) You can upload photos from the web-based interface, but the coolest part comes in the next paragraph.

Google has a free photo organizer program called Picasa. I've used this program for several months now, and like it better than any other I've used, mainly because of it's simplicity. The newest version of Picasa intergrates directly with Google's new Picasa Web Albums. You can activate your album, upload pics, and resize them automatically, all from within Picasa. Picasa also has the standard image editing/touch-up options as well as the ability to create movies of pictures, picture CD's, screensavers, and emailing resized pictures from within the program. You'll still need a Gmail account, because Picasa will need to log into your account to email pictures and upload to your web album.

I've also got another 100 invites.....Obviously not the cool part of the post.

I'm going to have to give Picasa another try. I currently use ACDSee to organize, rename, and resize all my pictures. However if Picasa can do it, and upload it all from the same program, that'll be a HUGE timesaver for me.

Any idea if you can externally link pics from Picasa-Online? Like to post here and what not?

Keep in mind the S-10CREWCAB.COM gallery
The nice thing about that is the information and pictures stay together. I can't count the number of threads I have had to delete since the photos were gone. Sometimes the thread has no meaning without the photos.

It does take a little work to resize your photos to save space, but it is really time well spent.

Photos of items for sale, lacking importance, etc. on disposable posting services is a great idea since the thread will be deleted anyway.
Those great crewcab pictures would be nice in our gallery though.

Brule is right. If it's a pic you post here, then it makes sense to keep it in the CC gallery here, so that the image isn't lost, and can be preserved on this server. Picasa web albums would be better for family pics and such, which is what I have in mine.

You can link pics from Picasa. You have to log in, and click on "Embed in blog/Myspace", and you'll get an HTML code box to copy and paste into a webpage.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/walt.amason ... 4402"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/walt.amason/RSB-_ ... CF1549.JPG"></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:66%; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/walt.amason ... ay2006">Ft. Lauderdal...</a></td></tr></table>

You want the image url (in bold) that is right behind the <img src= tag. Copy it and paste it here, and put the tags around it, and that's it. It's a bit more trouble since you can't directly paste the HTML code, but it's not that bad after you do it a few times. :)

That would give you this:

You can get a bit more indepth, and use the other URL in the HTML code to make the image like a thumbnail that you can click on, that will take you to the fullsize one.

Photobucket also has a program to do batch uploads and automatically resize your pics... it's called Flock.

I may have to download this one and check it out. See how it compares. Thanks Jigg. :)
