Removal of airbag

Whats the procedure for removing the airbag? Looks like you stick something through the back of steering wheel, but cant tell for sure what to do.

Poke and prod around in there and it will remove itself!

Removal Procedure

Caution

This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
* Air bag deployment
* Personal injury
* Unnecessary SIR system repairs

In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
* Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
* If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system.
1. Disable the SIR system.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to unlock the steering wheel.
3. Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees from the straight-ahead position in order to gain access to the access holes behind the steering wheel.
4. Insert a flat-bladed tool into each access hole and push the leaf spring to release the pin that retains the inflator module.
5. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees in order to gain access to the remaining access holes.
6. Insert a screwdriver into each access holes and push the leaf spring to release the pin that retains the inflator module.
7. Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SIR wiring.
8. Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
9. Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.
10. Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
11. Disconnect the electrical connector.
12. Remove the inflator module from the vehicle.
13. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period.

Installation Procedure

1. Connect the SIR electrical connector.
2. Connect the CPA retainer to the SIR connector.
3. Install the SIR lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel.
4. Install the SIR lead wire to the clip on the inflator module.

Important

Ensure that the SIR wires do not get pinched during installation of the inflator module.
5. Press the inflator module into the steering wheel firmly enough that the module engages and latches the notched pins in the leaf springs.
6. Rotate the steering wheel back into the straight position.
7. Enable the SIR system.
You are working with a black powder explosive charge. Treat it with respect. It saves lives, but can kill just as easy.

Thanks Brule I was afraid to push, poke and prod to hard. I thought thats how it came out.

How easily could it still go off even with battery and connector disconnected?

Give the system some time to discharge capacitors. Then still be cautious. Static electricity may be enough to discharge it.
Treat it like disarming a bomb. Stay away from the blast zone as much as possible.

When you get it off set it aside in such a manner that if it were to discharge the damage would be minimal and not to bystanders.

Its done pretty simple once you figure it out.

I kept trying to push it out from behind but you just pry on spring and lift from front of steering wheel.

Plug on airbag itself was the scariest.

Done for tonight work on it somemore tomorrow night.

Just going to install radio controls for now until I can pick up a shift cable, floor shifter will probably be a winter project.

Just my luck nothing is ever plug and play for me. First off airbag plugs off of new column are clocked different managed to make that work.

Now the radio controls kinda work. Program button works but seek, scan, vol, and mute don't work.

I plan on posting pics of connectors to see if anyone can come up with what each wire is for. There are four wires two of same color and two not.

Well I guess there was nothing wrong with plug after all. Contacts must have been dirty or its a little worn out, finally got it working.
