The Powerdyne for the S10 is a nice supercharger, but Powerdynes does have their problems. First, they do not use any sort of intercooler which is why they must run so much boost (7 psi) to get a 40-50% increase in power. This is ok, but everything will run hotter and will not be as efficient as a supercharger with an air/water or air/air intercooler. A similar supercharger with an intercooler and only 4-5 psi boost will make more power than the Powerdyne. The second problem is the need to rebuild the Powerdyne compressor after about 35-50k miles. This is partly due to the use of ceramic ball bearings. I still believe Powerdyne makes good superchargers, but it is also good to look at what Pro-Charger, Paxton offer. :)

I'm not sure, but do Pro-Charger and Paxton make superchargers for the 01-03 4.3 v6? The only other bolt-on supercharger I'm aware of is the one from Vortech, and it only fits 96-00 S10s. Please correct me if I'm wrong...the one you find might be 50 state legal :D

The only problem with running an external intercooler with the 4.3 v6 is that it would be a huge pain to route the intake plumbing. My dad has a 1992 Typhoon, which comes factory with an air-to-water intercooler, and the ducting to get to the intercooler and back to the turbo is fairly complex. That truck runs 15psi of boost and pretty much blows most other cars away at the stoplight...5.09 seconds to 60 measured with his accelerometer

My dad's 85 Buick Grand national also runs 15 psi of boost without an intercooler, but that's because the compression ratio is fairly low. (~8.25:1) IIRC. I can't remember what the compression ratio on our trucks are, but I think its below 10 or 9.5:1. If so, I think the 4.3 could handle 7 psi of boost with proper computer reflashing. I haven't heard about the bearing problems at 35-50k miles though =/...

Doh, I forgot about Vortech  .You might be right about the application years with the other manufacturers. :? I have found this same problem when trying to find a good supercharger for my SS. There are companies however that can install other superchargers, and still make them 50 state smog legal. There are a few guys in our club running Pro-Chargers on their Impala's and they aren't having and problems passing CA smog.

This is true. Everything is very tight on the CC's. This might mean a custom install.

Your Dad has a Typhoon and a Grand National! How lucky is that? 8) Those are both very cool vehicles. :D I have always wanted a Grand National (those things rock with very little mods).

It is 9.2:1 and yes it can handle 7 psi, but that is alot for the amount of power you are getting compared to an intercooled design.

It is actually very common on F-body's and B-body's with the Powerdyne setup. Maybe the V-6 version will last a little longer because they are nowhere near as powerful. :? The nice thing about the Powerdyne setup is that when the bearings do fail all you have to do is take off the blower belt and the truck will still run good enough to get you home. :) Some designs run a single belt and when they fail, well your not going anywhere soon.
