My brother just got a set of used BFG AT's at one of the big new & used tire dealers while he was down in Charlotte, NC. You'll need to look for the obvious cupping, uneven tread, knicks in sidewalls issues, as well as the price compared to amount of tread left on the used tires versus price of new ones/full tread/warranty. I see very little problems buying used tires, as long as the tires check out OK and the price is reasonable.

I have bought 4 sets of used tires in teh past 4 years (never new). I bought:

31x10.50 Polaris AT's with 70% tread on N90's for $150 + shipping

31x10.50 BFG AT's 2 with 90% tread, 2 unevenly worn with 90% on one half and 50% on the other, all on PA3's and including a spare steel wheel with spare 235 for $125 + shipping

32x11.50 Pro Comp MT's with 95% tread on 5P2's for $300 (local)

33x12.50 BFG MT KM's with 100% tread on Toyota chrome rims for $450 - $100 (what i sold the rims for) = $350.

Unless i needed a very specific size and tire, i wouldn't buy tires new again, there are so many deals out there it's ridiculous. If i decide to go to 35's, or need a new set of 33's, i'll be buying them on a local forum that has them FS all day, every day.

I used to buy used 245/50/16's for the Xtreme all the time. Local tire store would always have a set sitting around that some riocer tried to fit on his acura only to find out they were too wide :D :D

Since I've moved to the 275/40/17's all around I haven't been able to find any used ones. Looks like I'm going to have to take a $500 hit in the spring time :(

If you've taken off atleast 1.5" from the rear of the front fender, you shouldn't have any rubbing issues with 31x10.5's on 15x8 wheels with 4" of backspacing. I'm not 100% sure about larger tire sizes though. :)

Don't tire shops have some sort of measuring device for tread......what amount of tread should I be looking to have left on a good set of used tires????

Thanks
