speedometer is stuck wide open

Post by sjacoby »

I am in the process of working on the truck and i went to start it up and noticed that the speedometer is stuck all the way to the top. It stays there running, off, and I've pulled fuses and replaced them. Can't seem to figure this one out!

Stepper motor failures are more common in the fullsize trucks. Repair includes speedometer replacement. That will need to be done through your local GM dealer.
I have heard of some success in transferring used stepper motors, but I have no experience with that.
Neither solution will be cheap. Sorry.

It is part of the instrument cluster. The needle attaches to it. Removal of the knee bolster and cluster shroud are all that needs to be pulled for removal of the cluster.

You may have a bad spot in the stepper for the speedometer. It may be fine for a while and then go bad again. It should zero each time the ignition cycles on. I fear that it will happen again. Be prepared to look down and see it at 80mph in town. Been there , dun dat.

If you do happen to need a new speedometer head. you might check out Dorman, they have rebuilt speedometers for some GM trucks.
