Re: Liquid behind dash
I had a 2002 CC (now sold) that did this exact thing. Kind of a liquid sucking sound only on acceleration and mine did seem to sip a bit of coolant. I never did track down the source of the sound in the year or so I had the truck. I had the transfer case switch vacuum problem and replaced everything...

Ford 2.3 or Chevy 2.2 motor? Need opinions
Ok, I'm selling my 2002 CC. Not because there's anything wrong with it, I just don't need it anymore and I want to sell it while its still worth something. I'm looking for a used compact 2wd single cab truck with a 4 cylinder and a manual trans w, less than 120k miles for getting me to work and back...

Re: Side exit exhaust
Sorry for not updating, I've been a little swamped lately. I did try the side exit for a while, but the sound was never quite right. Very tin-can like with a horrible drone at 1700-1800 RPM, likely due to only having a foot or so of pipe after the muffler. I ended up reducing the pipe after the muff...

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
I replaced the seal again today. I believe I've found the cause of the leak. There was a slight groove that I had not previously noticed worn on the axle shaft where the seal rides on it. I polished the area with emery cloth until the groove was almost unnoticable by feel. I also installed the seal ...

Ok, I got the dial indicator out and got some detailed measurements. With the indicator at the outer edge of the wheel, there is only 0.010" of movement while turning the wheel. With the indicator at the outer edge of the brake disc face, there is 0.003" of movement while turning the disc. With the ...

No, you don't need to lift the truck, but you do need to remove the front tires to access the lower shock mount bolts.

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
Well, the axle is still leaking on longer drives. I'm just going to have to put in on the back-burner for now until I get some more time to mess with it. I'm just going to be driving it back and forth to work for the next couple weeks. I think I'm going to replace the wheel bearings and seal all at ...

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
Again, thanks all for the replies. I ran a piece of baling wire throught the vent nipple on the axle and it didn't seem to have been clogged. Also, just for grins, I put my vaccuum pump on the axle vent and the axle housing holds perfect vaccuum (meaning the seal is just fine with the truck sitting)...

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
Thanks for the tip. I just tried that this morning with the tires on and off. No visible wobble to the disc or wheel. So here's my best guess... Bearings are good. Axle shaft is straight. The seal only leaks during extended driving, on short trips its bone-dry. It HAS to be an axle vent issue causin...

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
Just an update Since I installed the last seal, I have been only making short trips with the truck with no leaks. (Less than 15 miles at a time). Re: Side exit exhaust
OK, I had the afternoon off and I got impatient and mocked the exhaust up with clamps. I ended up using a Flowmaster 40 muffler I had instead of the glasspack, and it sounds like a riceburner!! I had a 94 s10 blazer 4.3 years back with the same muffler and a full 3" tailpipe that sounded great! I'm ...

Ok, I bought my CC in August. It has the factory exhaust on it and it is extra-quiet. Every vehicle I've had in the past has been VERY loud, so I kinda enjoyed the factory exhaust... But, now that I've taken the truck down a few of our ranch roads, it's developed some squeaks and rattles in the cab ...

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
It was only a VERY thin film of RTV. I was just trying to eliminate any possibility of leaks other than from the rubber seal itself. I know they don't require it, but after three seals, you will try just about anything to keep from having to do it again. Also, no leaks yet, but I'm going to put abou...

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
I didn't scratch the inside of the axle tube and I used RTV sealant on the outside of the seals. Also I verified that the leakage was from the seal between the axle and rubber and not from between the seal and the axle housing.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
Well, I got a chance to take a look at the truck. The axle and bearings are fine. There is very little play in the axle (1/32 in.) I went and put in a Timken seal, so I guess I'll see if that fixes the problem. Again thanks for the advise everyone.

Re: Rear wheel bearing diagnosis
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to take a closer look at it tomorrow when I have some time. Both seals that I've put in it were O'Reilly house brand seals (MasterPro I think?), so If I can't find anything wrong with the bearing, I think I will go get a better brand seal. Although, I would think th...

When I bought my 02 CC a couple months back, the passenger side rear axle seal was leaking, so I replaced it. It held and didn't leak until last weekend when I put about 600+ miles on the truck. My 02 CC got new shocks yesterday. It had 120k miles and still had the factory shocks. I'm planning on removing the factory plastic bumper cover on my 02 CC and fabbing up a real skid plate for the oil filter as soon as I have a break. I removed the factory plastic bed liner in my CC today so I can put in a roll-on type liner this weekend. My choices are the Duplicolor Bed-Armor liner and Herculiner. Re: rear axle seal
Well, I got the seal replaced today. It really wasn't too difficult. The only reason the factory seal was leaking was that the little spring that goes around the outside of the seal to keep pressure on the axle shaft had slipped off. The bearings and axle shaft looked to be in good shape for 120k mi...

Thanks for the reply, Is it common for the axle to be pitted and the bearings to go bad on these trucks? Or do you say that because that may be the reason my seal is going bad? Well, I've been checking the vacuum lines that plug into the back of the HVAC control unit with a vacuum pump, and only two of them show any leakage. Howdy all, I just purchased an 02 S10 Crew Cab pickup. The truck is in excellent condition, but the front axle will not engage.
